Malaysian Favourite Recipes presents a two-in-one concept incorporating two cookbooks by the same author, Zakiah Hanum Hamid, namely Family Delights of the North first published in 1993 and The Great Malaysian Breakfast published in 1995. Zakiah, the first Director General of the National Archives of Malaysia, first started writing in the early 80’s after being encouraged by a journalist friend. Zakiah has since written several more recipe books including Family Delights of the North is her third cookbook after Masakan Tradisional Utara (Northern Traditional Cuisine) in 1991 and Kuih-Muih Utara (Cakes of the North) in 1992. Her cookbooks, which document popular food preparations from all over Malaysia, mostly from the northern states like Penang and Kedah, are presented in a simple but interesting way whereby each recipe is accompanied by an anecdote. These anecdotes reminisces her early life in Kedah and Penang and those of her own family in Kuala Lumpur besides giving interesting information about some of the local food. She often says that she is not a “cook” but merely a compiler of recipes who enjoys food all the time. She believes Malaysia has many culinary experts who are always willing to share their knowledge with anyone interested. Malaysian cuisine is unique and very much enjoyed by visitors to this country as well as Malaysians of all races.
